Bart Nijboer

Bart Nijboer’s practice examines the perceived boundary between humans and nature. Working with industrial materials and carefully orchestrated movement, he creates works that evoke processes associated with living organisms—breathing, adaptation, balance, and growth. Rather than representing nature directly, Nijboer explores the underlying forces that connect human experience to the wider ecological world.

His works often elicit an immediate bodily response. Through subtle shifts, rhythms, and transformations, viewers are invited to engage with the work not only intellectually but also physically and emotionally. In these encounters, distinctions between the mechanical and the organic begin to dissolve, opening a space in which familiar materials appear unexpectedly alive.

At the core of Nijboer’s practice is an inquiry into our relationship with the natural world. His work challenges the notion of humans as separate from nature, instead suggesting a continuity between body, environment, and the systems that sustain all forms of life. By making these connections tangible, Nijboer creates moments of recognition in which viewers experience themselves not as detached observers, but as participants in a larger interconnected whole.
